Hagia Sophia 1
Constructed in 537, when Istanbul was a Christian city under the Byzantine Empire, the Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world for more than a millenium. When the Ottoman Turks conquered Istanbul in 1453 under Fatih Sultan Mehmet, it was converted into a mosque. It was converted into a museum in 1935. The structure has survived countless wars and earthquakes and been repaired numerous times.
